The entrance to the park is only accessible when heading north on Hwy 1, the Trans Canada. It is very easy to miss even when paying attention. I missed it myself and had to take a big detour to get back to it.
Petroglyph Provincial Park in Nanaimo, British Columbia, is a unique and interesting destination for children to discover. Located in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, the park is renowned for its archaeological and cultural significance. It offers visitors the chance to explore ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks by the indigenous people of the area.
Once parked it’s a short uphill walk to the interpretive area with information boards that talk about the petroglyphs. There are also concrete recreations in the middle that can be touched, inspected or climbed on.
Bring some paper and a pencil or wax crayon and take rubbings of the recreations as a keepsake.
From the interpretive area the trail continues up the hill and turns into a smaller path. It’s at this smaller path to watch your step as you might just be about to step on a petroglyph!
The smaller path loops around and will take you back to the interpretive area. Where it turns out there are a number of other petroglyph sites in the area! The information board wasn’t very clear on exactly where to find them and some are on private property.
Overall the path is wide and stroller friendly up until the area with the petroglyphs. Though it’d be a good workout pushing a stroller up that hill. I’d recommend using a carrier instead for infants.
