Salt Spring Island, BC
Something we learned is that the fare we paid in Crofton included the return trip so when we left Salt Spring we didn’t have to pay anything and just lined up for the ferry.
Our journey started at Vesuvius Bay. As we disembarked the ferry, we marveled at the sprawling farms dotted along the way. We couldn’t resist stopping at the trust markets, those little huts by the road offering farm-fresh eggs, jams, and produce. It was heartwarming to find honesty boxes where we left cash for the items we selected.
With appetites calling, we made a delicious pit stop at Embe Bakery. Their savory pastries delighted our taste buds, setting the perfect tone for the rest of our day.
Continuing south, we reached Fulford Harbour, where the ferry arrives from Tsawwassen and Victoria. In this quaint harbor, we found solace in a small park and playground. We stretched our legs and watched the ferries come and go, appreciating the bustling yet serene atmosphere.
Exploring Ganges
Ganges, nestled in the middle of the island, stole our hearts. It had everything we needed – from local shops and restaurants to unexpected conveniences like schools and grocery stores. We cherished the fact that the shops were locally owned, each offering unique treasures.
Exploring Mahon Hall, Old Salty, and Love My Kitchen, we discovered an array of locally produced products, perfect for Christmas gifts. Soaps, cider, artwork, jewelry, knitted items, and cheese filled our shopping bags, reflecting the island’s creative spirit.
Curiosity then led us to the lower corridors of Mouat’s building, where the “Hall of History” awaited. Immersed in the island’s past, we admired historical photos and artifacts, deepening our appreciation for Salt Spring Island’s rich heritage. The island has long been home to the Salish peoples but did you know that it was also explored by both the English and Spanish all the way back in the 1700s?
For a delightful family dinner, a local shop owner recommended Salt Spring Inn. The cozy restaurant welcomed us with open arms, catering to our children’s tastes with their kids’ menu.
As we prepared for our return ferry journey, a wind advisory reminded us of the unpredictability of island hopping. Thankfully, all went smoothly, and we arrived back in Crofton with hearts full of memories and plans for our next visit.
Salt Spring Island, with its breathtaking landscapes and warm community, has left an indelible mark on our family. We eagerly anticipate our return, knowing that new adventures and cherished moments await.
